La Campanella. Performances

Kings and Beggars

Songs and dances of kings and beggars performed by the ensemble of early music "La Campanella"

The music, as in a mirror, reflects the life and work of famous rulers - Thibault Champagne, Henry VIII, Anna of Brittany and Prince of Orange, Charles XII of Sweden, Louis XIV - and their simple contemporaries. The first part of the program is entirely devoted to the august people. Not everyone knows, but among them there were also quite a few musically gifted personalities who composed music - what are the King Truver Thibault Champagne or, to this day, the English King Henry VIII being discussed. Many compositions were composed to the glory of monarchs, because it was the magnificent royal courts that were the greatest patrons and patrons of the composers and orchestras, it was there that the first balls and competitions of musicians originated. Louis XIV himself danced the burlesque roles in the palace ballets, and the legends about intrigues and the death of the minions and courtiers are still preserved in the songs.

But eras are changing, and now, among the noise of fireworks and the brilliance of court minuets, a premonition of impending unprecedented upheavals, revolutions and popular uprisings already arises, crowned heads with scaffolds will soon roll ... After all, the colorful screen and luxury of the life of aristocrats hide monstrous poverty and powerlessness of ordinary people. And there have been many cases in history when the plebs brought to despair raised riots, often mercilessly buried in blood, but also leading to revolutions.

Dramatic events, the harsh life of the poor, vagrants, lepers - all this could not remain in the people's memory in the form of many songs and scenes. They are dedicated to the second part of the program, where you can hear songs from English beggars, French migrants, Scottish Jacobites and Irish vendors.

One hundred and two hundred years ago, folk jokes and fairy tales about Gonze were very popular among the Western Slavs - and now, finally, these stories have come to us. And just see what happened! Eh, Gonze would lie quietly on the stove and there are cakes, so no - even for a fabulous sloth there are adventures. And all because of the wizard! It is because of his whim that our hero has to go save the princess and learn all the long road. And where only Gonze could visit - from the rocky shores of Ireland to the hot sands of the Sahara, from the luxurious palaces of metropolitan Europe to the modest Slovak villages. And everywhere in his wanderings, he became acquainted with the songs and music of the local inhabitants. In Spain, Gonza happened to see the chacon dance and in Germany listen to Tyrolean hunting songs. He marveled at the Moorish beauties, and at the ball he saw aristocrats dancing to pavan, galliard and passamezzo ... Hmm, or maybe he, a sly man, was only dreaming of it all, like a beautiful princess? After all, it is ridiculous to even think that our gonza Gonze is able to cope with the dragon ?!
